“Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” (Matthew 24:42)
We stay awake through three things: the merit of Jesus’ redemption, the Truth, and the movement of the Holy Spirit. When God asks us to stay awake, He implies we must not fall asleep. It’s easy to “fall asleep” as Christians in our daily lives. We must be aware of this and stay awake in every situation we meet.
We stay awake through Jesus’ redemption, the Truth, and the Holy Spirit. With every situation we face, we must arm ourselves with these three things and stay alert. We must always think, “What is the Truth here? What does the Holy Spirit want me to do? Am I thinking of His redemption?” If we rigorously apply this test to every situation we encounter, we stay awake and far from harm. For example: when we want to apply the Truth in our lives, we can think of the Bible. “What does the Bible teach in this situation?” In whatever circumstance or even in our everyday routine, we must keep watch and stay awake.
Many things in life put you to sleep. Money puts you to sleep. Desires and reckless ambition put you to sleep. Whatever you pursue discarding the Truth, the Holy Spirit, and His redemption puts you to sleep and in a dangerous and vulnerable position. When you are asleep, you are oblivious. Someone can steal all your things, and you can do nothing about it. We get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and before we know it, we’ve shunned the Truth, the Holy Spirit, and His redemption. We reach a dark and empty place with no value or substance. Some Christians spend their entire lives “sleeping” or in a slumber only to have a moment of clarity when it’s all too late. We must not sleep through life.
Stay awake, or you will lose everything. Life will pass you by, and while you’re busy making money, satisfying selfish desires, and seeking pleasure, you lose valuable time you can never get back. We must turn the perishable to the imperishable in this lifetime.
Hold on to the Truth!
Hold on to the Holy Spirit!
Cling to His redemption!
Only then will you live a fruitful and worthy life!
