For behold, the Lord God of hosts is going to remove from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support, the whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water; 2 the mighty man and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, 3 the captain of fifty and the honorable man, the counselor and the expert artisan, and the skillful enchanter. 4 And I will make mere lads their princes, and capricious children will rule over them, 5 and the people will be oppressed, each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; the youth will storm against the elder and the inferior against the honorable. 6 When a man lays hold of his brother in his father’s house, saying, “You have a cloak, you shall be our ruler, and these ruins will be under your charge,” 7 he will protest on that day, saying, “I will not be your healer, for in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you should not appoint me ruler of the people.”

Isaiah 3:1-7

God created all things and entrusted all things to humankind, but human beings suffer calamity (as mentioned in Isaiah 3) because we distance ourselves from God; we fail to live through God and become immersed in other things. God sent His only begotten Son for the sole purpose of turning us back to God. Drowning in destruction, Jesus became flesh to uplift us; He wants us to look solely to God, depend only on Him, and move according to His will.

What does this God hate the most? When we steal? Lie? Murder? Of course, God does not approve of these sins, but he despises the most when we treat something like God. We depend on it. We associate ourselves with it. We move according to its wishes. God despises idols. Those other sins fall to a distant second.

For this reason, we must ally ourselves to God. We must believe only in God. We must look only to Him. We must receive and live off what we receive from God. When we experience success or failure, attribute it to God! More than any other sin, recognize the sovereign Lord hates idols! With this in mind, we must continuously fix ourselves and repent.

What kind of idols do we worship? What are the things in life we treat like God? We depend on it, move according to its every whim. For some, it is money. For others, it is family, a learned skill, or talent. Examine your life, discover the idols you worship, and wipe the slate clean of all the idols in your life!

  1. God sent Jesus to have us look only to God.
  2. Instead of looking only to God, we worship idols.
  3. God hates idols the most.
