4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. Exodus 20:4-6
If there’s a road we want to get on, it’s the road to God’s miracles and blessings. Many of us are on the wrong road. We’re headed in the wrong direction. How can we get back on this path to God’s infinite blessings and miracles? We must do three things. Cast aside idols. Repent sins. And keep His commandments.
First. Cast aside idols.
We can be the light of the world. However, we dampen this light when we make idols, which are things or people we place above God. We do what our idols tell us despite their direct contradiction with God’s will. For some, we turn knowledge, skill, our jobs, our children, or even our families into idols. In other words, we place the will of these things above the will of God. We create these things with our own hands. We get married, have children, and create a family. We go to school, study, and create knowledge. When these things consume our thoughts and become our teachers, they have become idols. How do we know when an idol has a fixed place in our hearts? Idols reign supreme when we keep them intact even if it means betraying God.
When we place our jobs above God-
When we place our relationships above God-
When we place money and power above God-
When we do these things, we are worshipping idols.
How do we know if we are serving idols? The Bible is the best deciphering tool for uncovering idols. The Bible serves as prescription glasses that allow us to see the world clearly. Without these “Bible glasses” on, we are blind to the mechanisms of the idols at work in our lives. Read the Bible, and put on these glasses to uncover idols. So the first step to getting on the road to God’s miracles and blessings is to throw away your idols.
Second. Do not sin.
We must not sin. It’s that plain and simple. Stop doing what goes against God and His commandments. You can work your fingers to the bone, but without God’s blessings, all your efforts are in vain. If you sin, you cannot build your salvation. No time better than the present to stop sinning! After we crush our idols, we stop sinning to get on the right path to His blessings and miracles.
Third. Keep His commandments.
After we cast aside idols and stop sinning, we focus on keeping His commandments. We are powerless. We have control over nothing. You can be the smartest person in the world, be stubborn in your assertions, but in the end, it’s all in vain. In every situation you confront, keep His commandments. This is the third step to getting on the road to God’s miracles and blessings.
Whenever people ask me to preach at an open house or the grand opening of a business, I always teach from Exodus 20:4. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.” If you are starting a new business or a new chapter in your life, turn away from idols! The temptation is there. In a new situation with heightened pressure and stakes, you can easily place God on the back burner. Don’t turn yourself into an idol! Trust God over yourself! Don’t turn your knowledge, skills, and possessions into idols! Destroy your idols! Stop sinning! Keep His commandments! If we do these three things, we can overcome obstacles and rise above to receive His infinite blessings and miracles! Let’s change our lives now.
