25 A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse— 27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.” 29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” 31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” 32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” Mark 5:25-34

A woman who had been bleeding for years sought help for her affliction. She visits the best doctors, tries all types of medication, and does what anybody with an ailment does: she desperately seeks to heal herself. Imagine how difficult her life must have been, hemorrhaging day and night with no cure in sight. She is at her wits’ end. But she hears about Jesus. She believes if she touches His garment, Jesus will heal her. We need this kind of faith.

Physical illnesses are visible, and we recognize them to be problems that need solving. We go to the hospital, keep track of them, and aggressively seek treatment. However, ailments of the mind and heart go unnoticed for a lifetime. We think they are natural parts of our personalities and character. But arrogance, selfishness, laziness, greediness, lust, and hate are just other kinds of “afflictions. ” They’re equally detrimental. We can be mentally, emotionally, and spiritually sick. Our workplace, business, family, and society can be toxic and bogged down in disorder as well. Whether we realize it or not, we are drowning in our own afflictions and dysfunction.

Whatever afflictions we have, we perish unless we cure those sicknesses. Like this woman who bled for twelve years without a cure in sight, we have been suffering and drowning in our own afflictions. What is the way out? Jesus healed her because she had faith. “Daughter, your faith has made you well.” If we believe and touch His cloak, He cures us of all our troubles and afflictions. Jesus died on the cross for this very reason! God became man to free us from all our sins! We live in despair and sickness because we do not recognize our ailments and have strayed from God.

James 5:2 says, “Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.” Moths have eaten away our happiness, health, well-being, prosperity, glory, and acceptance. How many of us think our best days are behind us? Because of the “moths” in our lives, we slowly but surely move away from joy. To make tomorrow happier than today, touch His cloak! To make  next year better than this year, touch His cloak! Run to Jesus and touch His cloak! God has the power to cure all the ailments eating away at us. If we believe and have faith God cures our afflictions, His power comes to us. “At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him.” We need faith to rise above sin, disease, and despair.

A preacher from the Korean War, Sohn Yang-won, said, “We are suffering this calamity because we have forgotten God. The only way out of these dark times is to return to God.” Whatever hardships and whatever obstacles we face, return to God! Find your ailments and cure them through faith! Touch His cloak and be healed! “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” If we have faith, we are made well; we live in peace; and we are healed of our afflictions. Who could ask for anything more?
