When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. Genesis 5: 21-24

Our five-part series shines the light on Enoch in three regards: wheat and chaff, human relationships, and the devil’s temptation.

(1) WHEAT AND CHAFF- A life meeting both internal and external conditions.

(2) HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS-What can we learn through their human relationships?

(3) DEVIL’S TEMPTATION- How did the devil tempt them?

WHEAT AND CHAFF

Genesis 5 gives a written account of Adam’s family line. From the outside, people in the time of Enoch, the children of God, grew up, got married, had children, and raised families. Adam gave birth to Seth, who gave birth to Enosh. Enosh became the father of Kenan. Kenan became the father of Mahalalel and so on. They raised sons and daughters, lived out their years, and died. This is the “shell” of their lives, the husk of the seed. From the outside, we have the same dynamics. We are born into a family line, grow up, get married, have children, and die. We need this covering to nurture a full seed. However, if this is all that we are, we are nothing more than chaff God tosses into an unquenchable fire. We need an inner life to complement this outer shell.

On the outside, we grow up in a family, work, get married, and have kids. Enoch did all these things. Like the others, he had sons and daughters. He worked and provided for his family, but he was different than the others. “Enoch walked faithfully with God.” While getting married, having children, and working, Enoch walked faithfully with God. To become a full seed, we need the husk of being born, growing up, getting married, and having children, and we must compliment this shell with the seed of walking faithfully with God. Whatever we do on the outside, on the inside, we must walk with God. We must be faithful.

HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS

Human relationships are amazing. Getting married to the love of your life… having beautiful children… working at your dream job with great colleagues and co-workers… watching your kids grow up… Life is full of wonders. While enjoying life and all that is has to offer, do not let these things cloud your faith! While enjoying life and all that is has to offer, remember to walk faithfully with God. Enjoy your family. Enjoy your job. Enjoy life. But don’t enjoy it to the point you forget about God!

DEVIL’S TEMPTATION

When everybody you know and everybody around you lives their lives (raising children, working, and playing) without walking with God, the devil tempts us with peer pressure. “Everyone is doing it!” It seems like everybody in the world has forgotten about God. Why rock the boat? Why be the only person in the world to make walking with God and integral part of your life? Others invest a hundred percent of their time and energy into raising families and making a living. Why be different and walk with God? The devil tempts us to concede, to become like everybody else. We must resist.

Enoch had sons and daughters. He worked and raised a family. While raising his family, Enoch walked faithfully with God for three hundred years. Because he walked with God, he did not see death. “Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” When we walk with God, we gain eternal life.

Summary

  1. Like Enoch, we are born, get married, have children, work, and die (chaff).
  2. While getting married and having children, we must walk faithfully with God (wheat).
  3. Walk with God while enjoying life.
  4. Do not succumb to peer pressure. Walk with God despite how others live.
