Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were [beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Genesis 6: 1-2
Human beings increased in number on the earth. Sons of God married the daughters of humans. They gave birth to Nephilims who were giants, “heroes of old, men of renown.” On the outside, people in the time of Noah enjoyed great prosperity and abundance. From the outside looking in, we marry the spouse of our choice, enjoy prosperity, and live as “giants” in our respective domains. However, if this outer shell is all that we are, God will throw us into an unquenchable fire.
While marrying and living in prosperity, we must walk with the Lord. Whether we are rich or poor, healthy or sick, we must walk with the Lord at the core of our existence. If God blesses us with prosperity, we must never forget God’s commands. This inner life must anchor whatever is going on in our outside world. We must obey God at every corner. We get married and enjoy prosperity, but if we have no “seed” or inner life to balance this, we are nothing more than chaff.
When we are prosperous and well-off, the devil tempts us by having us forget about God. “.. .the sons of God saw the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.” Their desires outweighed any allegiance they had toward God. They saw the beauty of the daughters and forgot about God. We are in trouble when desire clouds our judgment. The devil urges us to replace God with the desire for money, beauty, the opposite sex, power… If we live according to selfish desires, we will perish like the sons of God did during the time of Noah.
Regarding human relationships, people did what they wanted. They did what pleased themselves and others. If they saw something they liked, they took it. They would go to any lengths to please other people. Pleasing yourself and others without putting God in the equation will spell your demise! Even when it comes to our loved ones, if we seek to please them while forfeiting God, know it will not end well. In every cultivated human relationship, place walking with the Lord and obeying Him at the center.
Whether we are busy or free, prosperous or poor, sick or healthy, in whatever situation we find ourselves in, we must follow God. If you are lonely, follow God. If you are surrounded by many, follow God. We must stop trusting humans “who have but a breath in their nostrils” (Isaiah 2:22). Place all trust in God! Don’t let selfish desires take control of your life! Don’t seek to please yourself and others! Please only God!
Summary
- Anchor outer prosperity with obeying God.
- Be wary of selfish desires that exclude God.
- Please yourself and others while walking with God.
