12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12: 1-2

As Christians, we often hear, “Find the will of God.” The will of God does not magically fall from the sky. Finding what God wants us to do can be the most significant challenge Christians face. How do we know His will? When we need to make a decision, how do we find God’s will? If you are lost and searching for His guidance, try these four things to get back on track.

One. Study the Bible.
If you don’t know the Bible, you will never be able to find His will. Knowing and understanding the Bible makes it a lot easier to discover God’s will. Reading the Bible will help you in the search for what God wants you to do. The Ten Commandments are a good place to start. And whenever you face a situation in life, reference it to the Bible and see what the Bible says to do. Make reading and studying the Bible an integral part of your life because you will never find God’s will without biblical knowledge.

Two. Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.
Finding the will of God cannot be solely an intellectual pursuit. You can’t just think about what God’s will is- you must offer your body as a living sacrifice. Because Jesus died for our sins, we, in turn, belong to Jesus. This implies that we have no “self.” We deny ourselves. God calls us to lose our lives for His sake and the sake of the gospel. We lessen selfishness and restrain personal desires. Because we offer our bodies as living sacrifices, we deny ourselves when seeing, hearing, or moving. We don’t pour our minds and hearts into selfish pursuits: we pour everything we have into offering our bodies as living sacrifices. Without this sacrifice, we will never find God’s will.

Three. Do not conform to the pattern of this world.
We live in an age where the world forces us to conform to the pattern of the world or risk being alienated and persecuted. We follow a blueprint to succeed in school, business, or life in general. We follow trends, keep an eye out for what is hot. Conforming to the pattern of this world has become a part of our culture, a part of our mindset. We want to fit in. Yet, the Bible says not to conform. It’s a hard thing to do. But followers of Christ must pattern their lives after the Lord, not according to the principles and trends of this world. Someone who patterns their lives after the world will never be able to find God’s will.

Four. Be transformed by renewing your mind.
Many of us are in a rut. We’ve been thinking and doing the same thing for years and years. We resist change. Our thought processes stay the same. Our mind dwells on ungodly thoughts and pursuits. One desire after another… one sinful thought after another… one bad habit after another… to break this cycle of evil, be transformed by renewing your minds! If we wake up every day yearning to be made new, to change for the better, we can dramatically change the trajectory of our lives. How do we renew our minds? Use your mind to find the will of God. Actively seek and pursue using all your faculties to find the will of God.

If you are trapped in an endless cycle of bad choices, drop everything. Focus on finding the will of God. Your bad choices and bad results come from the inability to see God’s will. How can you find happiness and peace when you make the wrong choices at every turn? Devote everything you have to study the Bible. Get clues to God’s will through Scripture! Offer your bodies as living sacrifices! Don’t conform to the world! Be transformed and renewed! If we do these things, we break free from the endless cycle of sin and self-sabotage.
