I, John, your brother and fellow partaker in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet, 11saying, “Write in a book what you see, and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” 12Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands. 13 and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and wrapped around the chest with a golden sash. 14 His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. 15 His feet were like burnished bronze when it has been heated to a glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. Revelation 1:9-15
In this passage, we find John on the island of Patmos. While he had suffered before in building his faith, John finds himself completely separated from the world. John suffered not because of his sin but because of his obedience to the Lord. Similarly, as we move further from the influence of this world, we face more difficult hardship as we become closer to God. Though he had a close connection to God before, John gained a greater connection as the Holy Spirit inspired him on that “Lord’s day” in Patmos. He was able to see God more clearly and vividly than ever before. John describes seeing a man with hair “white like snow” and was then given the vision of the seven stars and the seven lampstands to offer us great insights into our faith and churches than ever before.
We must be as John and be “in the Spirit on the Lord’s day.” Our old self may think God’s commandments are a burden, but to the believer, the commandments enable us to gain our salvation. They are a gift. Though we may lose our jobs, we must never betray God’s commandments and work on Sunday. We do not work at our jobs for money but because we seek to glorify God in the role He has given us. We must cut our ties to the world and put all our hope in the Lord. Only in this way will we be inspired to see a newer Lord than we have seen before with a clearer vision, just as John.
Sunday must become the most important day for us in order to receive greater insight and inspiration from the Lord. During our daily lives, we try to maintain our faith and follow God’s truth, but we get distracted, weakened. We lose our diligence, our dedication to our faith, our hope, and our connection to the truth. Sunday is when we can regain our commitment to our faith. Do not hope for short sermons or come late to service. How can someone who spent the whole week ignoring God be annoyed with sitting too long for a sermon? Why has Sunday not stayed important to us but, instead, become tiresome and burdensome to us? This is a sure way to destruction.
We must fight for our faith! We must work hard on Sunday to become more righteous, to build our understanding. Do not turn to yourself. We must be inspired by the Holy Spirit on this day. We must realize that we have short-changed our faith and discover where we have gone astray. We must consider the past inspiration we have received and build new understanding. We must review what we have learned and become transformed. Then we will see the change in ourselves and become thankful for our transformation. There is no fatigue. This is the grace of Sunday. Sunday must be our most important day because it is where we gain the understanding of what is righteous, repent our sins, and become stronger in our faith.
Come to church early, prepare your heart for sermon by considering how you have lived your life of faith. Rest from any worldly responsibilities. Be clean and well-dressed. If we prepare ourselves correctly, what we could not see before becomes visible to us through God’s grace and inspiration. We transform again and again as we move through the day and become overwhelmed with tears of thankfulness. Go to Sunday service and set your expectations high to better discover His purpose and to repent what you did not see as wrong before. A weight will surely be lifted, and you will gain joy and peace. You will be renewed, never fatigued. Those who believe and know to fear God will never fear anything in this world. This is why the life of the believer is truly free – so let’s keep Sunday correctly.
