We can make a lot of resolutions and promises about the things we will do and not do in the new year. It can get overwhelming, and many times, we end up folding on all our resolutions. This year, how about focusing on the ten commandments? How about simplifying our lives and turning all our attention to keeping the ten commandments in the new year? As we start the new year, let’s repent the sin of not keeping the ten commandments and vow to keep them in the new year.
First Commandment.
“I repent the sin of not keeping the first commandment. There is only one God, one Lord, and one Sovereign God, but I have strayed from You. I have put others in your place. I depended on other things for my success and well-being. For the new year, I will serve only You, for You are the source of all good blessings. Lord, give me the faith to obey only You and not waver. “
Second Commandment.
“I repent the sin of serving idols and putting other gods before you. I repent the sin of thinking I can accomplish something without You. From this moment on, I will not place anything or anyone above you. I will not look to them for answers and solutions in my life. From this moment on, I will look only to You. I surrender myself to You. Lord, destroy all the idols in my life and give me the faith to believe only in You.”
Third Commandment.
“I repent the sin of complaining and grumbling against God, and I repent blaming God for anything bad in my life. I repent doubting God and even belittling Him when things got tough. From this moment on, I will not complain or gripe. Whatever comes my way, good or bad, I know it’s from God, and it’s for the good of my salvation. And in whatever situation I confront, I promise to obey. Obey in good times, bad times, challenging times, and frustrating times. Lord, I vow not to complain or take your name in vain. I will trust and believe in your sovereignty.”
Fourth Commandment.
“I repent the sin of not keeping the Lord’s Day holy. The Lord’s Day is when I receive your foundational grace and live off that grace for the next six days, but I have not kept this day holy. It was merely a day of rest for me, and it had nothing to do with God. At the designated time and place, I will go to church and pour everything I have into receiving your grace. I will no longer spend Sundays thinking useless thoughts and entertaining myself. Lord, give me the strength to keep the Lord’s Day holy.”
Fifth Commandment.
“I repent the sin of not honoring my parents and respecting my elders. I repent the sin of not cherishing and valuing people of the cloth. Let God shower His blessings through my actions toward my parents and elders. Lord, give me the strength and wisdom to honor my parents.”
Sixth Commandment.
“I repent the sin of not loving my neighbor. I repent the sin of hatred and resentment toward others. I repent the sin of cutting others down and complaining about them to no end. Let me love others as I love myself in the new year, and stop me from killing others with my hatred and animosity. Lord, give me the strength to love others.”
Seventh Commandment.
“I repent the sin of adultery. Sexual transgressions have crept into every part of our society starting with the home. I don’t have the strength to overcome this temptation and lust on my own. You need to help me. As You say in the Bible, every sin is outside the body except the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Lord, give me the strength to overcome sexual immorality.”
Eighth Commandment.
“I repent the sin of having an improper relationship with material things. I repent the sin of wanting and acquiring things that I should not have or want. Regarding all material wealth, how much I should I have or don’t have, let me place it all in Your hands. Let me not take matters into my own hands and cross the line regarding material wealth. Lord, give me the strength to believe in God, that He knows how much I should have and will give to me accordingly.”
Ninth Commandment.
“I repent the sin of lying. Please give me the wisdom not to lie. Whatever the situation, I will not lie in the new year. I will not lie for my convenience or gain. All the lies I have said up to this point, I repent. I wipe the slate clean. Lord, give me the strength not to lie.”
Tenth Commandment.
“I repent the sin of being jealous of others. I repent the sin of wanting what others have and being envious of their wealth. Let me be content with what God has given me. God knows how much I should have, and if I live according to His will, He will give me the right amount. It’s not up to me to decide. Lord, give me the strength not to covet.”

In the new year, let’s keep the ten commandments and love God with all our hearts. Let’s not go halfway or believe with leftovers. Let this year be the year we embrace the ten commandments and God sets us high above all nations.
