17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17

Everything great in life comes from repenting. Everything bad in life comes from not repenting. That’s how important repenting, fixing what is wrong in the eyes of God, is in our lives. If you’re Christian and repenting isn’t at the top of your list of things to do, there’s no hope for a better tomorrow. We recognize the importance of repenting, but where do we begin? It can be a broad and daunting thing to do. Let’s start with three major things to repent.

One. Repent what you believe. In other words, repent your faith. Do you believe in God? Do you believe He is the author of all our blessings and misfortunes? Or do you believe in your wife or husband or children? Do you believe in people more than God? Do you believe in money or your job? Are these things more important than God? Have you thought, “I can do without God, but I really need this money!” Many of us have turned our loved ones, our jobs, and our material things into idols. We believe in them. We place them above God. So the first thing we need to repent is our system of faith. When it comes right down to it, what do you believe in?

Two. Repent how we value secular knowledge. Yes, knowledge is power, and the value of knowledge is undebatable. We make decisions and choices based on a synthesis of knowledge from different sources. We need financial knowledge when making financial decisions. In everything we do in life, we make “smart” decisions by applying relevant knowledge we’ve acquired through the years. It’s hard to turn this all back, but we need to repent this. Now, whatever situation we face or whatever choices we have to make, we have to change the knowledge we tap. What does the Bible say? What does God say to do in this situation? Sometimes, these two pieces of knowledge come in direct conflict. Your financial knowledge is telling you to go one way, but God is telling you to go another. Follow God. So the second thing we need to repent is how we use knowledge and how we should lean on the Bible and the will of God.

Three. Repent having the wrong desires. This is a hard one. We have desires, ambitions, and things we want to do. Sometimes, we call these urges natural and out of our control. We need to reign in and repent for having evil and ungodly desires. Some people destroy their whole lives and their families because of uncontrolled desires. So think about what desires percolate inside. Examine every one of them. Are they in line with God? Do they go against what is written in the Bible? Repent these desires.

When is the best time to repent? If you find something wrong, fix it right now. Do not delay or put it off despite the consequences. Put the consequences in God’s hand and repent immediately. Repenting might cost you your job or a friendship or it might be embarrassing. Whatever the case, do not delay in repenting. We need to be active seekers of what is wrong and equally active in rectifying those wrongs. Do not procrastinate when it comes to repenting.

If we do these things, what happens to us? First of all, we gain control of our chaotic lives. Our lives are put back in order. We become empowered. We gain freedom. We eliminate pain. We experience true peace and harmony. We gain confidence. We’re happy. We gain respect. We turn glory to God. So many amazing things happen when we repent our faith, knowledge, and desires!
From where does all our despair, misfortune, pain, and agony come? It comes from our inability to repent. That’s it! If you’re looking to rid yourselves of all the pain and suffering in your life, don’t look to the agent giving you pain. You’re looking in the wrong place. If you are in pain… If you feel down in your life… If things are not going great… look no further than repenting because repenting is everything.
