“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Are you weary and burdened? Wherever you are in life, you will get weary and feel burdened. Living life does that to do, and nobody is immune. We sin and turn away from God by the very acts that make us weary and burdened, and on top of that, we sin and stray from God when we try to alleviate this condition. To those who are weary and burdened, Jesus says to, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from me.” If we take on His Yoke, God gives us three amazing results: gentleness, humbleness, and rest. For what more can we ask?

To be gentle, humble, and for our souls to find rest, we must take on His yoke. Whatever situation we meet, good or bad, we must take on His yoke and never take it off. Whatever highs or lows we experience in life, we must always take on His yoke. That’s it. Wear His yoke, and all our troubles are solved.

What does it mean to take on His yoke? Two things: serve God and obey God. This is our yoke! It doesn’t mean to take on His yoke when you feel like it, or it’s manageable; it means taking on His yoke at all times. Serve God all the time. Obey God all the time. When you think of a yoke, you might think of it as being cumbersome and painful. Not so! Jesus says, “For my yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”

Now, there may be times when serving and obeying God is tough. It might cost you a job or a relationship. It might make your friends look at you funny or write you off. Whatever the case, don’t take off the yoke. Keep serving and obeying, and most importantly, don’t think about the consequences. “If I serve and obey God, this bad thing will happen.” Too often in life, we’re focused on the outcome or predict an outcome that eventually tailors our actions. Many times in life, this is smart. But when it comes to taking on His yoke, don’t think about results and outcomes you can’t control.

Daniel never took off God’s yoke. He served and obeyed Him at every turn. If he thought about the consequences, he would not have prayed. It’s a pretty easy formula; disobey the king, get thrown in the lion’s den, and die. But Daniel did not think of consequences when serving and obeying God. That’s how we have to be! God will take care of the rest! He saved Daniel from the lion’s pit. He saved Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the fire. God will deliver us from dire circumstances if we take on His yoke.

If we serve and obey God, we become “gentle.” Being gentle here refers to a quiet confidence of someone who serves and obeys God. You are gentle and calm when others are flustered and panicking in the face of unprecedented chaos. You are gentle when others are seething with anger and desperate for revenge. Nothing fazes you; you are unflappable because you serve and obey God.

When you serve and obey God, you are humble. You don’t set any plans or agendas before God. You have no ambition or career plans; you are humble before God and leave everything to Him. All you do is serve and obey. If we serve and obey God, we are gentle and humble, which leads to a restful soul. Let that sink in. How many of us are striving for a restful soul? Our minds are so chaotic, and this internal chaos manifests itself in the real world. We just want rest for our souls but do all the wrong things to achieve it.

Are you weary and burdened? Do you seek gentleness, humility, and rest for your soul? Look no further than taking on His yoke. Yes, it seems counterintuitive as a yoke seems cumbersome, but His yoke is comfortable and His burden is light. What does it mean to take on His yoke in the real world? Serve and obey Him at every corner. Don’t think about consequences and results that may stop you from doing good. Just serve and obey and let God take care of the rest!
