15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:15-17
You can have a family, job, and friends and still feel empty inside. We’ve all been there—those moments or periods when you feel empty, lost, and hopeless. In particular, as you get older, you struggle with your identity, life choices, and mortality. You try this and that to overcome this feeling of emptiness, but in the end, all your efforts are in vain. If you have this empty feeling, you open the door for the devil to come in for “your adversary, the devil walks around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”
We don’t have to look any further than Eve for a blueprint. What did she do to leave her heart empty and give room for the devil to come? First, she forgot about God. God was not in her thoughts. This is the first step leading to humanity’s fall, and it’s the first step to an empty heart. Think about this. How often do we forget entirely about God and do what’s in front of us? Is God an afterthought? If God is not an active part of your thoughts and you’ve forgotten about Him, you’re on your way to destruction. You’re on way to leaving your heart open for the enemy.
Second, Eve forgot about God’s command. He told her, “But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” God told them to cultivate and keep the Garden. So, she forgot about God and His commands. In our daily lives, if we forget about God’s commands and His will, that is, if we don’t incline our ears and try to find what God is telling us to do, we’re lost. We’re emptying our hearts and creating a void. If you are feeling empty and lost, ask yourself, “Do I actively seek the will of God?” Or have you forgotten about God and the word of God.
Third, Eve didn’t consider Adam. She would not have succumbed if she had considered what Adam was thinking or feeling. She ignores him. Adam is nowhere in her thoughts. This is the last step of her march toward destruction. Have you forgotten about God? Have you forgotten about His will? Have you forgotten about people? Who is your Adam? Have you considered their thoughts and concerns? When you are lost and empty, you don’t think about your wife, husband, children, parents, or friends.
We feel empty when we forget about God, His will, and others. We create an abyss, a void, and we make mistakes at these moments. Why? The devil sees an opening. He sees God is gone from our hearts and minds. The devil welcomes himself into our hearts, and it’s nothing but sin, destruction, and despair from that moment on. Forgetting about God, His Word, and the people of God set the table for the devil to feast.
If you are feeling lost, empty, and struggling to find meaning in your life, do not waste a second! Quickly search for God. Have God reside in your heart. Look for His will. What does God want me to do? And think about others. Fill your heart with God, His word, and your Adam. If the devil already sits in your heart, it’s time to expunge him! Repent and do these three things to avoid what caused Adam and Eve’s fall. Let’s spend more time thinking about God. If you fill your heart with God, the devil has no room to play, and your life will be filled with joy and contentment through His infinite blessings. Walk with Him at all times and never leave His side.
