17 Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. 1 Timothy 6:17-19

The challenges we face in life can turn into blessings or curses. While we may believe otherwise, this is not determined by our actions but wholly by the Lord, depending on how well we obey His commandments. Illness can be a blessing, while health can become a curse. Marriage can bring happiness or sorrow. Money can be a gift or a downfall. These things  – whether it is fame, wealth, or health – become curses when we believe that they are the sole source of our happiness, instead of our faith and belief in the Lord’s salvation.

When faced with challenges, our first instinct is to rely on our own skills and experiences to solve them. However, we must recognize that only God truly determines whether we receive blessings instead of curses. Rather than depending on ourselves or others, we should start by praying and seeking guidance from God.

“I pray to you, Lord, show me how to make this hardship a blessing for me.”

“Please, Lord, show me how to turn this hardship into a blessing.”

“Lord, I have received this illness – please show me how to turn it into a blessing.”

If we believe that only the Lord has the power to bless or curse, we must obey and follow His guidance.

We find this guidance through God’s truth and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Prayer is the constant and unwavering way to seek our path to blessings. After receiving the Lord’s blessings, we must use them wisely. If we do, the blessings will grow; if not, they can hinder our salvation. The passage advises us to “do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.”

  • To “do good” means following God’s purpose in all areas of life, including relationships and actions. For married individuals, this involves obeying God’s commandments in family and work, bringing joy to God and using His blessings wisely.
  • Being “rich in good works” means consistently doing good and helping others do the same, building a strong foundation of faith in line with God’s direction.
  • Being “generous” is using what remains after serving the Lord to help others share in His blessings. This can include sharing money, care, or advice to empower others to live according to God’s purpose.
  • To “share” means empathizing with others, especially when they’re sad, and guiding them toward God while staying true to His purpose.

Remember that it is our faithfulness – not our own power – that determines whether we are blessed or cursed. Obey the Lord to receive His blessings and use them wisely to build a foundation for eternal salvation and joy for yourself and others, as outlined in 1 Timothy 6:17-19. Embrace blessings, avoid destruction, and live eternally blessed by the Lord.
